In 2003, HHI Design began the process of transforming an abandoned law enforcement rifle and pistol range into an Orange County community park. The firm initiated an extensive lead remediation program and environmental assessment to identify potential impact to local animal species.
The focal point of the park is an amphitheatre formed by natural topography gently sloping to the adjacent shore of Big Sand Lake. Located at the north and south there are dry and wet play areas designed with space age, cosmic theme. The wet playground features a variety of animated pop jet fountains, squirt stations and colorful, fabric, shade structures which make the perfect picnic and parent viewing area.
The 48-acre park provides an abundance of recreational amenities which include; an amphitheatre, Little League baseball fields, basketball court, fitness trail, sand volleyball courts, soccer fields, dry and wet playgrounds, picnic pavilions, gazebos and dog park for small and large pets. Restroom facilities, a park office and a maintenance building were also components of the design. A trail located on the north side of the site provides a connection from the surrounding neighborhoods and adjacent elementary school.
